A message at Hanukkah to the Jewish Community in Northeast Ohio from Bishop Nelson Perez

As the great “festival of lights” begins, I wish to extend Happy Hanukkah greetings to our sisters and brothers in the Northeast Ohio Jewish community.  Each night, as you light another lamp on the menorah recalling the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem by Judas Maccabeus in 165 BCE, may the bonds of faith, family and friends brighten your lives.

We continue to share your sorrow about the events at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh but also proclaim with you the Hanukkah message that calls for the freedom of religions to be able to worship in peace and security.

Recalling the words of Pope Francis, we pray, “May the Eternal One bless and enlighten our cooperation so that together we can accept and carry out even better his plans.”  Shalom.
