The second CYA (pronounced “see ya”) at the Park event on July 27 at Lakewood Park offered everything from food to fellowship to prayer. About 100 people participated in the Coalition with Young Adults event, according to Christina Hannon, young adult engagement officer.
Some of the attendees mingled in the Lakewood Woman’s Club Pavilion enjoying dinner while others filled out tickets for the raffle. CYA advisory board members, including Mark Delsander and Pam Petty, manned the registration table where they greeted attendees and provided information on the network and event.
Outside, young adults chatted about a variety of topics including their jobs, parishes, families and more. Some played corn hole and others were at the volleyball courts a short distance away.
“We’re seeing some new faces this year,” Hannon said, adding they represent a variety of shareholders, “including religious, young, old and wisdom figures.” She said the advisory board hosts the popular summer event, which concluded with a brief sunset prayer service on the park’s Solstice Steps. Some attendees were from the Youngstown and Canton areas, since the network includes groups, events and other organizations that focus on youth Catholic adults and youth ministry.
CYA is a network, not a group or a membership organization, according to the CYA website. It offers information on the various stakeholders and their programs throughout Northeast Ohio.
Events and groups listed on the website are as diverse as parish youth ministries, Theology on Tap, young adult ministries, service organizations, social justice events, Bible/book study, prayer and networking opportunities and more.
CYA connects young adults and young adult ministries with each other and with religious communities, parishes, diocesan offices, innovators and the wider community.
It evolved from a conversation at a convocation of religious women in 2006 into a working group focused on engaging Catholic young adults. The working group included women religious, campus ministers, young adult leaders and the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Office of the Diocese of Cleveland.
The network continued to evolve until 2012 when an advisory board was formed. In 2016 Hannon was hired as CYA’s full-time young adult engagement officer.
The advisory board includes JP Graulty, president; Diana Hancharenko, secretary; Jason Shell, treasurer; Terrie Baldwin, Mark Delsander, Sr. Marian Durkin, CSA, Sr. Kate Hine, SND, Rick Krivanka, Bill Miller, Dan Morgan, Roberta Muoio, Pam Petty, Father Ed Suszynski and Tony Vento.
