received the prayerful support and
consolation of the Sacraments.
Joseph H. Newman was born on November 5, 1916 in Brooklyn, New York.
Joseph was a World War II Army
Veteran. He entered the Order of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers in New
York City and was sent to the
Blessed Sacrament Monastery in Cleveland, Ohio for training. After three
years, Joseph withdrew from the
Blessed Sacrament community but remained in Cleveland. He was employed
for twenty-five years at the City
of Cleveland’s Department of Community Relations until his retirement in
1986.
Joseph married Dorothy McMiller on January 11, 1958. They have two
children, Joseph and Angela
(Oglesby), and two grandchildren.
Joseph was the first permanent deacon ordained for the Diocese of
Cleveland. Joseph was ordained to the
diaconate on December 19, 1971 in the Cathedral of St. John the
Evangelist, Cleveland, Ohio by the Most
Reverend Clarence G. Issenmann. Following his ordination, he ministered
at Saint Henry Parish, Cleveland
and Saint Wenceslas Parish, Maple Heights. In 1978 he was assigned to
Saint Timothy Parish, Garfield
Heights. In addition, Joseph served as Assistant Chaplain of the Port of
Cleveland from 1986 until 2000. As
a deacon, Joseph exercised a full liturgical ministry including
preaching, baptizing and witnessing marriages.
He was also involved in hospital ministry. He continued to minister as a
deacon until health issues prevented
him from doing so.
