All the baptized, ordained and lay, work together to make the Church a sign of Christ’s presence in the world. To carry out its
mission, the Church calls on many people to exercise a wide variety of ministries, all working together to build up the Kingdom
of God. Among the diverse ministries in the Church are those of the ordained: Bishop, Priest, and Deacon.
The ministry of deacon is found in the New Testament (Acts 6:1-6 and 1 Timothy 3, 8-13). Today, the order of deacon has been
re-established by the Church.
The diaconate is an authentic form of ministry in itself, distinct from but related to the Holy Orders of priesthood and
episcopacy.
The deacon assists the bishop in a special way by discovering needs of charity and by responding to those needs. The deacon
is a sign of the Church serving the world.
