The Reverend Mr. John R. Bender

died, Friday, June 1, 2006, at Marymount Hospital after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments. Reverend Mr. Bender had congestive heart failure. John R. Bender was born on February 1, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio. John graduated from John Hay High School in 1944 and received a BA degree in accounting from Ohio State University in 1947. John held various accounting positions throughout his career including Lumen Cardium High School. He entered into private practice in the late 1970's. John was also an avid lover of the arts, active in various community theatres. John married Harriet Ann Stankiewicz on May 5, 1951. Their marriage brought them four children: Jane (Williams), Brian, John (deceased 1995), Rachel (Simler) and fourteen grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
John was ordained to the diaconate on May 20, 1989 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Cleveland, Ohio, by the Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla. Following his ordination, he was assigned to St. Martin of Tours Parish in Maple Heights. At the parish he exercised a full liturgical ministry including preaching, baptizing and witnessing marriages. He also was involved with visiting the sick and shut-ins, visitations to hospitals and nursing homes, bereavement ministry, marriage preparation, and pre-Cana. |
