The Reverend Mr. Leonard A. Sloan
Permanent Deacon, Saint Francis Xavier Parish, Medina

| died suddenly on June 24, 2000 at his home in Largo, Florida. Deacon Sloan was born on March 1, 1929. in Cleveland, .Ohio, to Adam and Katherine (Elewski) Slomkowski. He attended Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Cleveland and attended Cleveland Trade School for two years. At the age of seventeen, he joined the Army. He served in the military for two years receiving the World War II Victory Medal. Leonard was employed at WVIZ TV Channel 25 from 1967 until his retirement in 1994. He was a carpenter for the television station. Leonard was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Vugrich. He married Ruth Gaebelein Kulilich on September 2, 1978. Len had four children from his marriage to Nancy: Katherine, Linda (Jonela), Diana (Sefcovic) and James. He was also the stepfather to Ruth's three children: Linda (Fruce), Judith (Avery) and Donald Kalilich. Reverend Mr. Sloan was ordained to the diaconate on May 21, 1988 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Cleveland, Ohio, by the Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla. Following his ordination, he was assigned as Pastoral Minister at Saint Francis Xavier Parish in Medina where he continued to minister as deacon until his move to Florida in 1999. In addition to his ministry at Saint Francis Xavier Parish, Deacon Sloan was also Associate Chaplain at University Hospitals from 1989 until 1999. He also served as Chaplain at Medina General Hospital form 1994 until 1999. Deacon Sloan was especially dedicated 'to ministering to the sick and hospitalized bringing Eucharist to them and assisting their families in whatever ways they were in need. |
