Spiritual Guidance to Support your Discernment
Participants of the Joyfully Gifted retreat who wish to seek assistance in further exploring their spiritual gifts are offered the opportunity to speak with a trained spiritual discernment guide (spiritual directors/pastoral counselors in the Diocese of Cleveland) for a modest fee of $25.
The fee and scheduling your appointment are managed directly with your Guide of choice shown below. Please note: the fee should not inhibit your ability to participate and provisions will be made for those unable to meet this fee.*
The goals in spiritual guidance within a one-hour, 1-time confidential conversation includes:
- To help illuminate your top working spiritual gifts;
- To assist in consideration of where God might be leading you;
- To suggest next steps for discerning the use of your gifts.
Please select from the list of trained discernment guides below to schedule your appointment. Please allow up to three weeks for a scheduled appointment.
Sandy Appeldorn (Euclid, Cuyahoga County)
Best time to contact: Monday-Friday, after 5pm
Bio: Certified Spiritual Director, JCU; currently working in human resources, holding a professional certification from the Society of Human Resource Management. She is experienced in ongoing spiritual direction and supervision as well as retreat leadership and planning for St. Ignatius High School, the Jesuit Retreat House, and Ignatian Spirituality Institute. She is a liturgical musician and member of St. Noel parish in Willoughby Hills.
Darlene Bednarz (Twinsburg, Summit County)
Best time to contact: Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm or Saturday, 10am-3pm
Bio: Pastoral Associate at Ss. Cosmas and Damian Parish; Certified Pastoral Minister, undergraduate & graduate degrees in Ministry, Ursuline College, Director of Adult Formation and Bereavement.
Margaret Balewski (Independence, Cuyahoga County)
Best time to contact: Monday-Thursday, 10am-8pm
Bio: In full time ministry as a spiritual director for individuals and serves in retreat leadership for Jesuit Retreat House, Ignatian Spirituality Institute, and St. Ignatius High School; offers retreats on a variety of spirituality topics. Active at St. Basil the Great in adult faith ministry and RCIA. Certified as a Spiritual Director, John Carroll University.
Lisa Davidson (Hudson, Summit County)

Bio: Certified Pastoral Minister, Masters in Pastoral Ministry, Urusuline College; serves as a Parish Catechetical Leader at St. Mary in Hudson. She is an experienced educator and retreat leader who most enjoys helping others find joy in their faith and their gifts.
Elaine Fechko (Parma, Cuyahoga County)

Bio: Masters in Pastoral Ministry, Ursuline College; certified Spiritual Director, John Carroll University; presently serving as Pastoral Minister at St. Matthias Parish
Julie Graham (Cleveland, Cuyahoga County)

Bio: Certified Spiritual Director, John Carroll University (Fall 2015) and MA in Social History. Facilitates individual retreats and works with women in recovery. She feels passionate about her work and is honored to be invited to participate in the personal journeys of those she works with.

Bio: ordained Deacon; Spiritual Life Coordinator for St. Mark Parish; certified in Pastoral care, and MSW.
Deacon Jay Ogan (Lorain, Lorain County)

Bio: ordained Deacon, presently serving St. Peter Parish in Lorain. Involved in various ministries for most of his adult life prior to ministry as a deacon.
