The Reverend Thomas W Tifft, President-Rector, Saint Mary Seminary, Wickliffe died Monday, 9 July 2012, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
Thomas W. Tifft was born on 5 October 1942. His parents were the late William H. and Kathryn (Ritchey). He was educated at St. Mary, Collinwood, St. Philomena, East Cleveland, St. Joseph High School, Borromeo Seminary College and St. Mary Seminary.
On 31 May 1969 in Saint Gregory the Great Church, South Euclid, Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Father Tifft’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar at Saint Bridget of Kildare, Parma. On 5 July 1973 he was appointed as residential member of faculty at Saint Mary Seminary. Father Tifft was appointed Parochial Vicar at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist on 12 March 1979 in addition to his teaching responsibilities at Saint Mary Seminary. On 18 June 1981 he was appointed registrar at Saint Mary Seminary. On 15 March 1985 Father Tifft was appointed Vice Rector and Academic Dean at Saint Mary Seminary. He was appointed President-Rector at Saint Mary Seminary on 1 June 2001.
Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop A. Edward Pevec on Thursday, 12 July in the Resurrection Chapel at the Center for Pastoral Leadership, 28700 Euclid A venue, Wickliffe at 3:00 pm followed by a procession to the Aula Magna for a wake until 8 pm. Night prayer will be prayed at 8 pm. On Friday, 13 July visitation will continue in Saint Gabriel Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord from 9:30 to 10:45am followed by the Funeral Mass at 11 :00 am. Bishop Richard G. Lennon will be the main celebrant and Father Joseph McNulty will be the homilist. Interment at All Souls Cemetery will be presided over by Father Mark Latcovich.
