A funeral Mass was celebrated on Aug. 2 at Regina Health Center in Richfield for Blessed Sacrament Father Dennis William Ruane.
Father Ruane, 86, died on July 30 at Regina Health Center.
A Philadelphia native, Father Ruane was born on Jan. 13, 1932. After growing up in the Philadelphia area, he joined the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1952 and prepared for religious life in Barre, Massachusetts. He professed religious vows with the Blessed Sacrament congregation Sept. 8, 1954. He studied at Saint Joseph Seminary (SSS) in Cleveland 1954-1960, and was ordained a priest on Sept.19, 1959.
Father Ruane’s first assignment was as a teacher of Latin and Greek at the Eymard Seminary in Hyde Park, New York 1960-1967. He was a Blessed Sacrament missioner in Uganda in 1970 and in Tanzania 1970-1974.
After a year a few years of hospital work in Camden, New Jersey and Fairfield, Connecticut, he returned to Tanzania 1978-1987. When he came back to the United States, he turned to his passion of counseling, working with the homeless and assisting with Alcoholics Anonymous in Albuquerque and Farmington, New Mexico, 1987-2000.
Next he became a high school counselor at Juan Diego Catholic High School, Draper, Utah 2000-2009 and he was a counselor in Hawaii 2009-2015.
Father Ruane lived in Highland Heights and then Richfield 2015-2018, serving as a spiritual director, counselor and lecturer in scripture at both Blessed Sacrament locations.
He had a passion for learning and did graduate studies at Columbia University. At age 80, he earned a doctorate in psychology in drug and rehab counseling from the University of Utah.
Burial was at All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
