The Reverend John L. Viall, Senior-Priest Retired, died Sunday, 17 November 2013, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
John L. Viall was born on 25 June 1932. His parents were the late Arthur W. and Agnes (Dittler). He was educated at St. Martha Elementary School, Akron, St. Vincent High School, Akron, St. Gregory College, Cincinnati, Borromeo Seminary College and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 23 May 1959 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop Floyd L. Begin ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Father Viall’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Augustine, Barberton. On 11 June 1964 he was transferred to serve as Parochial Vicar of SS. Philip and James, Cleveland. He was appointed Associate Chaplain of the SERRA Club of West Cuyahoga County on 28 December 1964. Fr. Viall was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. William, Euclid on 23 February 1972. On 13 November 1972 he was appointed Chaplain of Knights of Columbus Willoughby Council # 2886. On 24 June 1976 he was named Vicar Coadjutor of St. Albert the Great, North Royalton. Fr. Viall was appointed Pastor of St. Albert the Great, North Royalton on 6 September 1977. Fr. Viall retired on 15 June 2009. During his years of service Fr. Viall also served on the Clergy Personnel Board (1987-1996).
Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop Richard Lennon on Wednesday, 20 November in St. Albert the Great Church, 6667 Wallings Road, North Royalton at 3:00 p.m. The wake will continue until 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 21 November in St. Albert the Great Church at 11:00 a.m. Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, JCD will be the main celebrant and Fr. Lawrence Bayer will be the homilist. Interment is at All Saints Cemetery, Northfield.
In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church. May Fr. Viall and all our priests, deacons and bishops who have died, live forever in the joy of the Resurrection.
