The Reverend Joseph C. Weigand, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Mary Parish, Elyria died Monday, 14 January 2013, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
Joseph C. Weigand was born on 10 December 1936. His parents were the late Harry C. and Catherine B. (Klein). He was educated at St. Paul, Akron, St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, Borromeo Seminary College, Wickliffe and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 19 May 1962 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop John F. Whealon ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Father Weigand’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar at Saint Margaret Mary, Cleveland. While serving this appointment Father Weigand also served as a Religious Instructor at Borromeo High School (1962 to 1964), Cuyahoga Northeast Deanery Director, CYO (14 September 1964), and Chaplain of the 107th Armored Calvary of Ohio National Guard (14 February 1967). On 17 June 1970 he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Joseph, Cuyahoga Falls. Father Weigand was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Paul, Euclid on 26 September 1974. He was transferred on 10 December 1976 to serve as Parochial Vicar at Saint Jude, Elyria. On 19 March 1981 he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Patrick, Rocky River Drive, Cleveland. Father Weigand was named Pastor at St. Mary, Elyria on 1 September 1981. On 13 September 2005 he was named Senior Associate of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Cuyahoga Falls. Father Weigand retired on 10 December 2006 and named Pastor Emeritus of Saint Mary, Elyria.
The wake will begin on Thursday, 17 January at Anthony Family Funeral Home, 1990 South Main Street, Akron from 4:00 – 7:00 pm for family and friends. Vespers will be held on Friday, 18 January at 3:00 pm in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1905 Portage Trail, Cuyahoga Falls where the wake will continue until 8:00 pm. Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop Roger Gries. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 19 January at 10:00 am in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the main celebrant. Interment will take place at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Randolph.
In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church. May Father Weigand and all our priests, deacons and bishops who have died, live forever in the joy of the Resurrection.
