The Reverend Nelson J. Callahan, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Raphael Parish, Bay Village died Tuesday, 15 January 2013, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
Nelson J. Callahan was born on 20 August 1927. His parents were the late Nelson J. and Mary K. (Mullholand). He was educated at St. Ann, Cleveland Hts., St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland, Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 28 February 1953 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Father Callahan’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar at Saint Patrick, West Park. On 12 June 1958 he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Agatha, Cleveland. Father Callahan was transferred to Conversion of Saint Paul, Cleveland to serve as Parochial Vicar on 13 June 1963. On 28 October 1965 he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Peter, Cleveland. Father Callahan was appointed Resident Chaplain of Saint John College, Cleveland on 12 September 1967. On 18 December 1974 Father Callahan was named Pastor at Saint Raphael, Bay Village and served until his retirement on 21 June 2002. Father Callahan served in many capacities such as a member of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission 1958 to 1960; Auxiliary Notary of the Diocesan Tribunal 1961 to 1964; Spiritual Director of the Safety Division Society of the Holy Name in 1964; Spiritual Director of the First Friday Club of Cleveland in 1968; Pro-Synodal Judge of the Diocesan Tribunal 1970 to 1992; Sole Judge according to the new American Procedural Norms; Diocesan Archivist 1974-1977; Presbyteral Convener 1995-1998.
Vespers will be celebrated by Reverend Francis Walsh on Friday, 18 January at Communion of Saints Parish in Saint Ann Church, 2175 Coventry Road, Cleveland Hts., at 3:00 pm. The wake will continue until 8:30 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, 19 January at Communion of Saints Parish in Saint Ann Church at 1:00 pm. Bishop Roger Gries will be the main celebrant and Reverend Thomas Hagedorn will be the homilist. Private family interment.
In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church.
