Bishop Nelson Perez will celebrate the funeral Mass for Father Paul J. Sciarrotta, senior priest-retired, at 11 a.m. Dec. 1 at Notre Dame Provincial House, 13000 Auburn Road, Chardon. Father William Padavick will be the homilist.
The wake will begin at 3 p.m. Nov. 30 at Notre Dame Provincial House. Auxiliary Bishop emeritus Roger Gries will preside and be the homilist at vespers at 3:30 p.m. The wake will continue until 8 p.m.
Father Sciarrotta, 81, died on Nov. 25.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1936 to the late Charles and Jennie (Indelicato) Sciarotta. Father Sciarotta was educated at Woodland Elementary School, Audubon Junior High School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel (East) Elementary School and Cathedral Latin High School, all in Cleveland; Borromeo Seminary, Wickliffe; St. Gregory Minor Seminary, Cincinnati; and North American College, Rome. Archbishop Martin O’Connor ordained him to the priesthood for service in the Diocese of Cleveland on Dec. 19, 1962.
Father Sciarrotta’s first assignment was as parochial vicar of St. Mary Parish, Chardon. On June 17, 1970, he was transferred to St. Margaret Mary, South Euclid to serve as parochial vicar. Father Sciarrotta was assigned as parochial vicar of St. William Parish, Euclid on June 30, 1975. In addition, he was appointed director of the St. Julie Billiart Center for Catechetics on June 30, 1975, where he served until July 1, 1987. On June 1, 1977, Father Sciarrotta was transferred to serve as parochial vicar of St. Louis Parish, Cleveland Heights. On Aug. 23, 1978, he was assigned resident chaplain for Notre Dame Educational Center and Provincial House, Chardon. On June 28, 1979, Fr. Sciarrotta was appointed moderator of the Lake-Geauga Chapter of the Christ Child Society. In addition, Father Sciarrotta was assigned administrator of Holy Angels Parish, Chagrin Falls (1987-1988). On Dec. 19, 1994, he was assigned as spiritual director of the Lake-Geauga Council of the NCCW. He was assigned residency and to minister at Notre Dame Educational Center and Provincial House, Chardon on Aug. 10, 2006.
Father Sciarrotta retired on Sept. 1, 2011.
He was known as a kind and generous priest who faithfully served the Church. His gentle smile, kind disposition, priestly heart and faithful service to the women religious of the diocese will be greatly missed.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland.
