In Remembrance – Reverend Raymond J. Horley

The Reverend Raymond J. Horley, Senior Priest-Retired, died Sunday, 19 January 2014, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.

Raymond Joseph Horley was born on 25 February 1931. His parents were the late Raymond A. and Gertrude (Schaefer). He was educated at Annunciation Elementary School, Good Counsel Elementary School, St. Michael High School, St. Gregory Minor Seminary, Cincinnati, Mt. St. Mary (Philosophy), Cincinnati and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 24 May 1958 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.

 

Fr. Horley’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Vincent de Paul, Akron. On 13 June 1963 he was transferred to St. Anselm, Chesterland to serve as Parochial Vicar. In addition to this assignment on 21 August 1964 he was appointed Director of CCD in Painesville Deanery. Fr. Horley was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Thomas Aquinas, Cleveland on 3 October 1968. On 8 February 1972 he was appointed Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Peace, Cleveland. Fr. Horley was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Jude, Elyria on 24 June 1976. He was appointed Administrator of Annunciation, Akron on 2 December 1976 and as Pastor on 14 December 1976. On 30 May 1978 he served as a member on the Art and Architecture Committee. On 28 June 1984 Fr. Horley was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Sebastian, Akron. He was transferred on 14 June 1989 and appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Bartholomew, Middleburg Hts. On 21 June 1994 he was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Mary, Berea. Fr. Horley was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Mel, Cleveland on 20 June 1995. Fr. Horley retired on 25 February 2001. On 15 September 2001 Fr. Horley was appointed Administrator pro tem of St. Teresa of Avila, Sheffield Village on 15 September 2001 and served until 12 June 2002.

 

Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop Roger Gries on Thursday, 23 January at Little Sisters of the Poor, 4291 Richmond Road, Warrensville Hts, at 3:00 p.m. The wake will continue until 7:00 p.m. On Friday 24 January the wake will continue in St. Columbkille Church, 6740 Broadview Road, Parma at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the main celebrant and Fr. Thomas A. McGovern will be the homilist. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Cleveland.

 

In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church. May Fr. Horley and all our priests, deacons and bishops who have died, live forever in the joy of the Resurrection.
