Reconfiguration Plan
Bishop Lennon speaks about closing his parish, answering Christ's call, moving on Print E-mail

The following is the first part of a two-part question and answer interview with Bishop Richard Lennon about the clustering process.

Catholic Universe Bulletin: You’ve been very open in speaking and writing about your experience in having to close your own childhood parish in Boston. What are some of your memories growing up there?

Bishop Richard Lennon: We moved to that parish when I was three years old. It certainly was a parish, first of all, that was full of relatives on my father’s side. Also, it was a parish that from an early age I was made aware that my family were one of the founding members of the parish. They were ones who with horse and team brought from the railroad yards all the materials to build the church.

The memories go back really to first grade which I can remember. There was a school and it was a very active parish. It was not only religious, but also educational and social, there were all these different organizations be it Boy Scouts or school activities. CYO was very big in those days. So that you lived your life really in the parish. We only lived two streets away so my involvement between school and also from a very young boy being an altar server was very significant. Living so close, oftentimes my younger brother and I were the ones who were at the last minute called to come in and serve. They were very positive memories.
