Auxiliary Bishop emeritus Roger Gries will be the main celebrant at the 11 a.m. Oct. 6 funeral Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Parma, for Father Douglas Makowski. Father John Carlin will be the homilist.
Father Makowski, 80, died on Sept. 30.
He was born Dec. 5, 1938 to the late Joseph and Jean (Kapela). Father Makowski was educated at St. Stanislaus School, Cleveland; St. Joseph Minor Seminary High School, Oak Brook, Illinois; St. Joseph College Seminary, Oak Brook, lllinois; St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri; Notre Dame University, South Bend, Indiana; Our Lady of Angels Seminary, Cleveland; St. Joseph Major Seminary, Teutopolis, Illinois; John Carroll University, University Heights; and Ashland University, Ashland.
He was ordained to the priesthood for service to the order of Friars Minor on June 24, 1966 in Teutopolis by Bishop William A. O’Connor. On Nov. 1, 1990, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Cleveland.
Father Makowski was a teacher and principal at Padua Franciscan High School in Parma from 1967-1980. On Jan. 1, 1981, he was assigned chaplain at the Western Reserve Psychiatric Habilitation Center in Sagamore Hills. He was assigned as parochial vicar at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Parma, on June 13, 1981 and on March 25, 1985, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish in Cleveland.
On Aug. 25, 1987, Father Makowski was transferred to St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Parma to serve as parochial vicar. He was assigned to St. Joseph Parish, Strongsville, on June 23, 1992, then was transferred to St. John Bosco in Parma Heights on July 1, 1997 to serve as parochial vicar. On Juned 13, 2000, Father Makowski was assigned parochial vicar at St. Francis de Sales, Parma, and then he was transferred to St. Michael Parish in Independence on July 5, 2005 to serve as a parochial vicar.
Father Makowski retired on Dec. 31, 2008.
His wake begins at 1 p.m. on Oct. 5 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 6750 State Road, Parma. Vespers will be celebrated at 3 p.m. by Bishop Nelson Perez with Father Charles Strebler as homilist. The wake will continue until 5 p.m.
Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park.
