Comprehensive Immigration Reform
The Welcoming the Stranger Committee is grateful to the many parishes and individuals in the Diocese who responded to the United States Bishops’ request to sign postcards advocating that Congress take up Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). Close to 15,000 signed postcards (approximately 15% of those distributed) were delivered to the local offices of our U.S. Senators and Representatives during April, urging them to enact legislation that keeps immigrant families together, adopts smart and humane enforcement policies, and ensures that immigrants without legal status register with the government and begin a path toward citizenship.
Many more postcards were also sent electronically to Congressional representatives. It’s not too late to send an electronic postcard to Congress, and read more information on the Church’s position in favor of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Please go to the JFI web site, www.justiceforimmigrants.org.
Bishop John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah and chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration was interviewed for an article which appeared in the 16 May 2010 issue of Our Sunday Visitor. The article is answers to tough questions about the Church’s position on immigration. Find the article reproduced: www.justiceforimmigrants.org. The article is listed in the right column on the home page under the title: From Our Sunday Visitor: Answering Tough Questions About Immigration
In addition, presentations on Catholic Social Teaching and CIR were made to parishes and organizations throughout the diocese. If you’d like to schedule a speaker on church teaching and immigration reform, please call Sister Rita Mary Harwood, SND, at 216-696-6525 or 800-869-6525, extension 2200, or Sister Kathleen Ryan, SND, at 216-939-3843.
