Catholic Schools future examined
in Plain Dealer story
On Monday, May 24, 2004,
the Plain Dealer newspaper ran a front page story
featuring the headline “Catholic Schools’ New Model” in which the paper
examined the closing of several schools this year, while focusing on the
independent start-ups such as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in Hudson.
Although supplied with
the information, the newspaper omitted statistics which reflect a decided growth
in the demand for Catholic Education in a variety of areas from the inner city
to growth communities outside of Cuyahoga County. Several high schools also
witnessed decided growth.
Detailed information
given to the reporter included current regional population trends. The
enrollment decrease in Catholic schools was directly proportionate to the
decrease in public school enrollment which was directly proportionate to
the loss of student-age population in the particular Northeast Ohio
communities cited. This was never included.
Information supplied by
the Education Department of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland indicates that 41
schools reported enrollment increases in 2003 compared to the prior year.
