The Catholic Community Foundation made a distribution of nearly $1.4 million to the Office of Catechetical Formation and Education as a result of the generosity of parishes throughout the diocese that participated in the Rooted in Faith – Forward in Hope fundraising campaign. The initiative raised $170 million to support diocesan and parish ministries.
The presentation program was made on Jan. 31 during a Catholic Schools Week event hosted by St. Ambrose School in Brunswick. Parish and school representatives received checks totaling $1,393,573.
The grants will benefit 156 Catholic schools and parish catechetical programs throughout the eight-county diocese. Retreats and textbooks, technology upgrades, enhancement of school curriculum with STREAM programs, creation of Maker Spaces and more to advance 21st century learning initiatives are among the things that will benefit from the grants.
Bishop Nelson Perez and Christopher Knight, diocesan superintendent of Catholic schools, made brief remarks at the event, which was streamed live by the diocese and on the education office’s Facebook page. Father Bob Stec, St. Ambrose pastor, welcomed guests and introduced the event and a St. Ambrose student described what her Catholic education means to her.
What’s behind this $1.4 million? People – pastors, parochial vicars, volunteers, parishioners and more. This is the fruit of their love and care,” said Bishop Perez.
“It is with great joy that we present these grants to our schools and catechetical programs during Catholic Schools Week, a time in which we celebrate the quality, Gospel-centered education provided to nearly 42,000 students in the Diocese of Cleveland. Thank you to the faithful for their continued generosity and support of Catholic education, a hallmark of the Church in Northeast Ohio and throughout the world,” the bishop added.
Knight thanked St. Ambrose for hosting the event and congratulated Father Stec for being honored for his support and leadership in Catholic education. He will be recognized at the National Catholice Education Association convention scheduled for April in Cincinnati.
