Radio and TV veteran Dick Russ will host the next hour-long radio program, “Table Talk,” at 5 p.m. June 14 on AM 1260 The Rock, with Bishop Nelson Perez. The program debuted in April. Their conversation topics center on diocesan events, the bishop’s involvement with V Encuentro and his role as chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Hispanic Affairs Subcommittee. Also featured will be questions from listeners on the latest media headlines.
Bishop Perez will open the program reflecting on the ordination of three new diocesan priests on May 19. “It was a grace-filled moment,” he said, recalling the details of his first priest ordination since being installed as a bishop. He describes the act of ordination and laying-on of hands as “surreal,” and said, “I could not believe I was doing this.” Only six years ago, he was pastor of a parish in Philadelphia, he said. “Fast forward and I am ordaining priests.”
The conversation continues as Bishop Perez breaks down the importance and the purpose of V Encuentro, a faith-building, leadership process to help serve Hispanic Catholics. In his role as chair of the USCCB Hispanic Affairs Subcommittee, the bishop outlines the Encuentro process of ecclesial prayer and consultation.
Listeners from across Northeast Ohio took advantage of the opportunity to ask the bishop questions for the second “Table Talk” program. Topics ranged from relative to morality issues and the latest media news reports to seeking clarification on the scheduling of Holy Days, integration of Theology of the Body within diocesan schools and a variety of other ministry-related issues. The bishop provided informative answers based on the official teachings of the Church. He also provided an outlook on programs the diocese is hoping to grow.
After the initial 5 p.m. airtime on June 14, “Table Talk” will replay on future dates.
