Bishop Lennon opens second Holy Door at National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Euclid

News of the Diocese

April 4, 2016

There are two opportunities for the faithful to cross the threshold of a Holy Door in the Diocese of Cleveland.

Bishop Richard Lennon opened a second Holy Door on April 3 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, 21281 Chardon Road, Euclid. The shrine is a mission of the Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity.

The faithful are invited to cross the threshold of the Holy Door during the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, which ends on Nov. 20. Those who enter the Holy Door can receive a special indulgence. The Holy Door ritual dates to the 15th century, when a Holy Door was opened by Pope Alexander VI on Christmas Eve to mark the holy year 1500.

Those who travel to the shrine and enter the Holy Door are crossing the threshold from sin to grace, slavery to freedom and from darkness to light. Bishop Lennon opened the first Holy Door at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, the mother church of the diocese, during a special ceremony and liturgy in December.

The bishop said crossing through the Holy Door ?will help people come into a deeper relationship
