On Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st, the Diocese of Cleveland celebrated the 50th Anniversary of its Latin American Mission in El Salvador. Saturday’s festivities included a dinner held at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe.
One of the highlights of the dinner was the premiere of a special documentary prepared for the anniversary, Reverse Mission: Celebrating 50 years in El Salvador. The video examines the history of the Mission in Latin America.
Bishop Lennon celebrated a special liturgy at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Sunday afternoon. At the conclusion of the liturgy, the Cleveland Mission Team was presented with the Alleluia Award, an honor presented every 5 years in the name of Sr. Dorothy Kazel, a Cleveland missionary who gave her life while working in El Salvador.
During his homily, Fr. Stephen Vellenga, current director of the Diocesan Mission Office, gave thanks for all of the blessings that Cleveland has been for El Salvador as well as the blessings that El Salvador have provided the faithful of the Diocese of Cleveland.
