The Reverend Anthony Cassese, 66, Pastor at St. Jerome parish in the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Father Cassese was ordained a priest in April of 1977 and served St. Jerome parish on Cleveland’s east-side for more than 27 years, first as a Parochial Vicar and later as Administrator and most recently as Pastor since 2006. Prior assignments included Parochial Vicar at St. Louis (now closed) in Cleveland Heights, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Wickliffe, and as a staff member at Notre Dame College in South Euclid.
Father Cassese managed a battle with Cystic fibrosis from the time he was a child until complications lead to his death on Tuesday. A proud graduate of Cathedral Latin High School, he continued to manage the disease and as his good friend, Father Ralph Wiatrowski, Pastor of St. Barnabas parish in Northfield Center, reflected, “You would never have known he had Cystic Fibrosis unless he told you, he never let it become obvious.”
Arrangements for Father Cassese’s wake and funeral will include a Vesper Service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2015 in St. Jerome Church with the Wake following Vespers until 8:00 p.m.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015 also at St. Jerome Church, 15000 Lake Shore Boulevard in Cleveland.
