In Remembrance – Reverend John M. Jenkins

Columbus Bishop emeritus James A. Griffin will be the main celebrant at the 11 a.m. June 24 funeral Mass at St. Paul Church, Akron, for Father John M. Jenkins, pastor emeritus of the parish. Homilist will be Father John McNulty.

Father Michael Gurnick will preside at vespers at 3 p.m. June 23 at St. Mary Church, Painesville, with Father Stephen Vallenga as homilist.

The wake will continue until 7 p.m. at the church. Father Jenkins’ body will be transferred to St. Paul’s in Akron, on June 24, where the wake will continue 9:30-10:45 a.m., prior to the funeral Mass.

Father Jenkins, 83, died on June 19.

An Akron native, he was educated at St. Martha and St. Vincent de Paul schools in Akron and graduated from St. Gregory High School in Cincinnati. He attended St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, Borromeo Seminary, Wickliffe and Saint Mary Seminary, Wickliffe. He was ordained to the priesthood for service of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 28, 1960, in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist by Bishop John J. Krol.

Father Jenkins served as parochial vicar at St. Timothy Parish, Cleveland until June 11, 1964, when he was transferred to serve as parochial vicar at St. Aloysius Parish, Cleveland. He served as parochial vicar at St. Luke Parish, Lakewood, from Oct. 16, 1968 to Jan. 28, 1971, when he was assigned as parochial vicar of Holy Cross Parish, Euclid. He was assigned as chaplain for University Hospitals, Cleveland, on May 29, 1975, with residence at Holy Rosary Parish, Cleveland, and on April 26, 1976, he was assigned as parochial vicar at Holy Rosary Parish and chaplain at University Hospitals, Cleveland. On July 1, 1977, he was assigned as co-chaplain at University Hospitals, Cleveland, and Huron Road Hospital, East Cleveland, with residence at St. Philomena Parish, East Cleveland.

Father Jenkins was named pastor of St. Paul Parish, Akron, on Oct. 15, 1981, and he served there until his retirement on Oct. 4, 2004, when he was named pastor emeritus.

Father Jenkins loved priestly ministry and had a great compassion for the sick and suffering, spending countless hours visiting the hospitalized.

Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron.
