Why Catholic? Meet Bishop Edward C. Malesic
Lent Lent in the Modern World

Lent in the Modern World

The season of Lent is a staple in the liturgical calendar.  During a pandemic, we may be thinking, "how do we sustain our traditional practices?"

Last Spring, during Holy Week, Northeast Ohio was at a high point of the pandemic.  Through "Reflections with Father Ryan Mann," online videos and practice Catholic resources were shared and thousands of Catholics were inspired to have a meaningful Holy Week at home.

The practices of Lent still apply - fasting, almsgiving and prayer - even as the pandemic remains a constant in our modern world.  Father Ryan Mann, administrator of St. Basil the Great Parish in Brecksville, invites us to reconnect and recommit during this holy time of year.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LENT?

Lent is the annual time when we prepare to celebrate Easter, which is not just a season. It’s about a person — Jesus — and his rising victoriously over all that hinders us from the fullness of life. Therefore, the purpose of Lent is relational. Lent is meant to help each of us have greater intimacy with Jesus, so that his life and love can flow into our hearts (grace). It’s all about our relationship with our God.

LENT AS A RELATIONSHIP FEELS DIFFERENT THAN OUR NORMAL IDEAS. IS THIS TRUE?

I think so. Lent is usually a time when people try very hard to say “no” to something and, hopefully, become very impressive with their willpower. However, if Lent is a relationship, I often imagine Jesus looking at us trying so hard and saying, “Hi, how ya doin’ over there?” Lent is about creating space in our lives, both exteriorly and interiorly, so that communion with him can happen and grow.

SO HOW DOES THIS COME TOGETHER WITH OUR CURRENT CULTURE AND MODERN WORLD?

If it’s all about relationship, then we can ask questions about human relationships and analogously apply them to Jesus. For example, what hinders creating great intimacy in our human relationships? I think the biggest hindrance in the modern world is screens. I don’t think anyone can really argue that smartphones, tablets and binge watching have made our families stronger. So if that’s true in human relationships, it’s also true with God. In light of this, perhaps for Lent someone may choose no social media, or fasting from screens from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. as a family and use that time to pray, do some spiritual reading and spend quality time with family and friends

DOES THIS MEAN WE SHOULD NOT GIVE UP CHOCOLATE OR ALCOHOL?

Once again, it’s about relationship with Jesus, coming to know him and allowing him to know us. Therefore, giving up candy or anything else may be good for kids to get in the habit of sacrifice, but the goal is a deepening relationship with him, so that needs to guide our decisions in our life. For me, candy does not affect my relationship with him as much as screens. So, to increase intimacy with Jesus, I need to put down the tablet and pick up the Bible more this Lent

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS ON LENT?

Maybe just one. Lent is God’s gift to us, not our gift to him. That means in God the Father is a desire to fill you with the heart and beauty of Jesus by stripping us of our cramped and numbed egos; and since this is his divine desire, our hope is in him. We, like the Blessed Mother, say, “Let it be done to me.” The accent mark is on his labor of love, not our grasping. And so, as we prepare for Lent, let’s let God give us the Lent he wants and be sure to ask him, “Lord what do you want me to engage in this Lent?” He is eager to tenderly father us. We simply need to remember, it’s all about our relationship with our God.
