In Remembrance

The wake for Father Timothy Buyansky, OSB, will take place 3-6:30 p.m. March 2 at St. Andrew Abbey, 2900 Martin Luther King Blvd. Drive in Cleveland (behind Benedictine High School).

Abbot Gary Hoover, OSB, will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial after the wake at 7 p.m.

Father Buyansky, 78, died on Feb. 25.

Born as Dennis Buyansky, he was one of five children of the late Vincent and Helen Buyansky. The Buyanskys were members of Holy Family Parish in Cleveland. He attended Holy Family School and graduated from Benedictine High School in 1960, then studied at St. John University in Collegeville, Minnesota for two years before entering the novitiate of St. Andrew Abbey (the Benedictine Order of Cleveland), where he received the religious name of Timothy. He professed his first vows on July 11, 1963.

Father Buyansky earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Borromeo Seminary College in 1965. He then pursued graduate theological studies at the former Blessed Sacrament in Euclid and Saint Mary Seminary in Cleveland, where he earned a master of divinity degree in 1969.

Bishop William Cosgrove ordained him to the priesthood on June 7, 1969 at St. Benedict Church in Cleveland, along with his classmates, Father Joachim Pastirik, OSB, and Father Dominic Mondzelewski, OSB.

In 1970, he earned a master’s degree in library science from Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois. Father Buyansky joined the faculty of Benedictine High School and for the next 48 years, he served as the librarian, multi-media specialist, moderator of the chess team, the Ski Club and was director of the Benedictine Drama Club. During four decades in that role, he directed more than 80 plays and musicals before retiring in 2017.

From 1979-1981, he served as chairman of the High School Section of the National Catholic Library Association.

Father Buyansky was novice master for the Benedictine community from 1971-1974 and director of junior professed monks from 1974-1994. He served as the prior or second superior, from 1991-1995 and from 2014 until his death. For 36 years, he provided pastoral assistance on weekends at the former St. Paul Parish in Euclid, and from 2007-2017, at the merged parish of St. John of the Cross in Euclid. Most recently, he assisted at St. Stanislaus Parish in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood.

Survivors include his Benedictine confreres, with whom he lived in community for the past 58 years; a sister, Marilyn Lutz; and a brother, Kenneth Buyansky. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Donald; and a sister, Joan Butler.

Burial will be March 3 in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland.
