The Diocesan Memorandum (formerly the Clergy Memorandum) is a service of the Office of the Chancellor for clergy and lay leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland, providing a summary of relevant and timely information from the Office of the Bishop and other diocesan offices.
Liturgical Texts News:
The Latin Church bishops of the USCCB approved three liturgical texts proposed by the Committee on Divine Worship at the June 2021 plenary meeting: the final draft of the Order of Penance retranslation; a series of additional intercessions and Psalter concluding prayers for the Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition (estimated completion and voting on all LoH texts in 2023); and proper texts for the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Texts will be submitted to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments for the requisite confirmation before being published and implemented in the United States.
September 2021 Liturgical Calendar Reminders:
Pope Francis has ordered the inscription of a new Optional Memorial for St. Hildegard of Bingen, Doctor of the Church, on September 17. Celebrants may use texts from a suitable Common in the Roman Missal and Liturgy of the Hours.
Catechetical Sunday falls on September 19, 2021. On May 10, 2021, Pope Francis issued motu proprio the Apostolic Letter Antiquum minsterium by which he formally established the lay ministry of Catechist in the universal Church. Conferences of Bishops have been charged with crafting a complementary norm that delineates the age, qualifications, formation, and appropriate exercise of this ministry; the appropriate Committees of the USCCB have begun work on this task. In the meantime, those exercising catechetical ministry may be blessed using Chapter Four of the Book of Blessings, “Order for the Blessing of Those Appointed as Catechists” (nos. 491-508), although this blessing does not constitute institution into a new liturgical ministry.
February 2022 Liturgical Calendar Notes:
Pope Francis has ordered the inscription of a new Optional Memorial for St. Gregory of Narek on February 27. Celebrants may use texts from a suitable Common in the Roman Missal and Liturgy of the Hours, unless proper texts are published before February 2022.
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas), Wednesday, February 2, 2022, is one of only two liturgical celebrations which call for a procession of the faithful into church carrying lighted candles - the other being the Easter Vigil. The faithful gather outside the church (or for pastoral reasons, inside the church), and after their candles are lit, the priest blesses them. The Procession follows.
The feast of St. Blaise falls on Thursday, February 3, 2022. If the blessing [of throats] is conferred during Mass, the blessing follows the homily and general intercessions, or, for pastoral reasons, the prayer of blessing may take the place of the final blessing of the Mass. The blessing may be given by touching the throat of each person with two blessed candles. The blessing may also be given to the sick or the elderly in their homes when they cannot attend the parish celebration, even by lay ministers. (Book of Blessings, nos. 1626-1629)
