Diocesan Memorandum

July, 2021 | Vol. 55, no. 7 | Prot. No. C-25/2021

The Diocesan Memorandum (formerly the Clergy Memorandum) is a service of the Office of the Chancellor for clergy and lay leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland, providing a summary of relevant and timely information from the Office of the Bishop and other diocesan offices.

Office for Worship

From the Bishop’s Committee on Divine Worship Newsletter, May 2021:

Pope Francis Adds Seven Invocations in the Litany of Saint Joseph
In honor of the current Year of Saint Joseph, Pope Francis has decided to insert seven new invocations in the Litany of St. Joseph (Prot. n. 133/21).  The new invocations are Guardian of the Redeemer, Servant of Christ, Minister of salvation, Support in difficulties, Patron of exiles, Patron of the afflicted, and Patron of the poor. They were drawn from the writings of various Popes, as they reflected on the foster father of the Lord Jesus Christ and patron saint of the universal Church.  In accord with the Congregation’s instruction, the Committee on Divine Worship has approved the version found on the Office for Worship website.

August 2021 Liturgical Calendar Reminders:

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on Sunday, August 15, 2021.  The Proper Vigil Mass for the Assumption should be celebrated after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14th.

January 2022 Liturgical Calendar Notes:

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is celebrated on Saturday, January 1, 2022. In the United States, the obligation to attend Mass on the Solemnity of Mary is abrogated when this celebration occurs on a Monday or a Saturday. In this case, because the Solemnity occurs on a Saturday, the Vigil Mass of the Epiphany is celebrated and Evening Prayer I of the Epiphany is prayed at the Liturgy of the Hours. While one is not required to anticipate a Mass on the preceding evening of a Sunday or feast of precept, the Vigil Mass of the Epiphany is not an anticipated Mass but a Vigil. According to the Universal Norms of the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, “Some Solemnities are also endowed with their own Vigil Mass, which is to be used on the evening of the preceding day, if an evening Mass is celebrated” (no. 11).

The diocesan Mass for Life, which coincides with the United States Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, will be celebrated on Saturday, January 22, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist.

The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 23, 2022, has been declared by Pope Francis to be the Sunday of the Word of God.  In the Motu proprio Aperuit illis, issued September 30, 2019, Pope Francis declared that “the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God.”  The full text may be read on the Vatican’s website.

Permissions and dispensations for postponed weddings

Permissions and dispensations for marriage are valid for six months from the date of issue. Many weddings  have been postponed during the last year, and the permission or dispensation may have expired by the time that the rescheduled wedding occurs. Please double-check the date of issue of the dispensation or permission, and contact the staff of the tribunal office for the dispensation or permission to be re-issued if necessary. If a wedding has already occurred and you realize that the dispensation expired, please contact the staff of the tribunal office so that a sanation may be arranged.

Updated pandemic safety protocol for CCA visitors in our offices and our monthly In-Office Grief Support Groups.

Catholic Cemeteries Association, in accordance with guidelines set by the CDC, the State of Ohio, and the Diocese of Cleveland regarding COVID-19 protocols will no longer require masks/facial coverings of our office visitors and our In-Office Grief Support attendees.  We do, however, strongly suggest that those not yet vaccinated or who are otherwise vulnerable, continue to wear a face mask.  CCA will continue to follow strong hygiene practices and encourage all who are ill to stay at home.  Our new Virtual Grief Support Group and our Grief Support e-newsletter are excellent alternatives for individuals who are not able to join us in person for Grief Support.

We continue our special appeal to east side and Avon area parishes to let your grieving families know about our free and safe in-office monthly grief support meetings.  Please advise those in your parish who are in contact with the bereaved, to reach out and suggest one of our grief support groups.  Even if you have grief support at your parish, this is a free source of additional support for them.  With the challenges and stresses in our current pandemic environment, many people are in need of one or more support systems. They will be blessed by taking advantage of all the support resources available to them.  To request a supply of our Grief Support flyers for the grieving in your parish or for more information, please contact Rhonda at 216-930-4866.

3:00 pm In-Office Grief Support groups meet in the main office building at each of the following six cemetery locations:

  • All Saints, Northfield | 480 W. Highland Road
  • All Souls, Chardon | 10366 Chardon Road
  • Calvary Cleveland | 10000 Miles Avenue
  • Holy Cross, Akron | 100 E Waterloo Road
  • Holy Cross, Brook Park | 14609 Brook Park Road
  • St. Joseph, Avon | 32789 Detroit Road

5:00 pm Virtual Grief Support group meets for an hour via Zoom and follows the same monthly topic discussion as the in-office groups.  Sign-up at to receive login information and to download the handout materials.

“A Closer Walk With Thee” – CCA Monthly Grief Support E-Newsletter:

Our monthly grief support e-newsletter, “A Closer Walk with Thee” provides much of the same helpful grief support information that is presented at the monthly meetings.  This e-newsletter is emailed the first Tuesday of each month to any family/individual who has expressed an interest in our bereavement programs.  To subscribe to this grief support resource, go to the signup form at or contact Rhonda at 216-930-4866.
