Diocesan Memorandum

July, 2022 | Vol. 56, no. 7 | Prot. No. C-24/2022

The Diocesan Memorandum (formerly the Clergy Memorandum) is a service of the Office of the Chancellor for clergy and lay leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland, providing a summary of relevant and timely information from the Office of the Bishop and other diocesan offices.

OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Establishment of the Secretariat for Canonical Services
Bishop Malesic has established the Secretariat for Canonical Services as a Secretariat in the curia of the Diocese of Cleveland. Over the last several years, the staff of the diocesan tribunal has taken on the role of providing canonical advice and assistance to people and offices throughout the Diocese, and other functions which are not limited to the strictly judicial role of a tribunal. The establishment of the Secretariat makes clear that these other roles are pastoral and administrative not judicial, and properly belong to an office established and organized for those purposes. Rev. Gary Yanus, JCD, has been appointed the first Secretary for Canonical Services, in addition to his appointments as Judicial Vicar and Vicar General. The Tribunal and the Secretariat for Canonical Services will continue to share personnel, resources and a contact telephone number for all your needs related to the law of the Church: 216-696-6525 ext. 4000.

Office for Worship

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Formation Sessions - There are three remaining summer sessions for formation of extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion:

  • Sunday, July 10, 2-4:30 pm at St. Brendan, North Olmsted
  • Tuesday, July 19, 7-9:30 pm at St. Albert the Great, North Royalton
  • Sunday, July 31, 2-4:30 pm at St. Patrick, Wellington

Please register candidates using the link provided in the May 27, 2022 memorandum to pastors. We expect to hold additional sessions this fall.  Dates and locations of those sessions are to be determined.  Questions?  Contact Judy Liederbach by email, or 216-696-6525, ext. 3630.

August 2022 Liturgical Calendar Reminder - The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on Monday, August 15, 2022. Please note that this solemnity isnot a holy day of obligation in the United States this year.  Please also note that in our diocese Masses after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, should celebrate the Vigil of the Assumption.

Office of the Chancellor

Status Animarum 2021-2022
The reporting period for the Status Animarum for 2021-2022 is approaching. The online report will be available beginning 1 August 2022. An email will be sent to your Diocesan email account in late July with detailed instructions on completing the report. If you have any questions please refer them to the Status Animarum Team or 216-696-6525.

Parish Boundaries
An interactive map of parish territorial boundaries according to their decrees of establishment or modification is available from the Chancellor’s website.

TRIBUNAL | SECRETARIAT FOR CANONICAL SERVICES

As notified previously, from the end of July 2022, marriage cases submitted to the Diocesan Tribunal and/or Secretariat for Canonical Services will need to be submitted by a Case Specialist approved for this ministry by Bishop Malesic. We hope that this change will allow us to provide better service to parties and ministers. Priests, deacons and lay ministers who have served as procurators until now but have not completed Case Specialist training, should try to complete any unsubmitted petitions as soon as possible.

Around sixty Case Specialists (priests, deacons, and lay men and women) have been trained and approved by Bishop Malesic. Another training program will be offered next spring, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for six weeks from April 25, 2023; further details to come in the future.

Parish ministers and petitioners can visit a new page on the Tribunal website which allows you to find a Case Specialist near you and receive a referral.

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Your Taxes Can Benefit Our Catholic Schools!
Many thanks to the growing number of Catholic Education advocates supporting the new  Angel Scholarship Fund. This exciting program is a great opportunity to ‘turn tax dollars into tuition’ through an Ohio income tax credit of up to $750 ($1,500 if married filing jointly) against your 2022 state tax liability. Donations can be designated to benefit any school in the Diocese of Cleveland, or those with the greatest financial need. Click here for more information.

Parish Legacy Gift Opportunities
The Catholic Community Foundation has many different resources to assist your parish in promoting legacy gifts in support of your parish. If you are interested in these opportunities, please email Jean Ann Montagna or call her at 216-696-6525 x8070.

Bishop’s Golf Classic
The Bishop’s Golf Classic will take place on Monday, August 1, at Westwood Country Club. Come and tee up ‘fore’ Catholic education with Bishop Malesic and Bishop-elect Woost. All funds raised support diocesan tuition assistance. Sponsorships are available here .

2022 Catholic Charities Appeal

‘Be The Light’ Appeal – Letters will be mailed to current Appeal donors the week of July 12th, seeking an additional gift if you are able. We are most grateful for the continuing prayers and financial support from the faithful; support that allows us to provide help, create hope, and serve all.

Summer Camp Postcards. Something new for 2022. We will be sending a postcard to donors emphasizing the camps funded by Catholic Charities. Be on the lookout for a fun way to make a donation and “spend” your summer.

Catholic Charities Appeal Phonathon – Beginning July 7th and continuing thru August, calls will be made to parishioners asking for support for this year’s Appeal. For homes with caller ID, the number of the call is 216-696-6525. Last year nearly $150,000 was raised by phone.

Parishes can go to www.CatholicCommunity.org/parishmaterials for updated parish statistics and bulletin announcements.

Now Open: Registration to Participate in #weGiveCatholic|
This year’s Online Day of Catholic Giving takes place on Giving Tuesday, November 29th. Let’s come together to celebrate generosity and highlight the good works of all our Catholic Parishes, Schools, Catholic Charities sites/programs, and Catholic nonprofits. Register your organization today.

All new participating organizations (i.e. which did not participate in 2021)  that register before August 31, will be entered in a random drawing for a $500 prize. We will help you prepare for the giving day with one-on-one training in August. Dates to be announced soon. Contact Linda Corcoran at the Catholic Community Foundation, 216-696-6525 x1042.

SECRETARIAT FOR PARISH LIFE AND SPECIAL MINISTRIES

Synod Update
This has been quite a journey: over 250 delegates gathered at the Cleveland Public Auditorium on Saturday, June 11, to pray, share, listen and discern our next steps on this synodal journey together. This was the conclusion of the diocesan phase of the Synod on Synodality.

Over the past 8 months:

  • Over 200 facilitators were trained from Oct 2021 – Jan 2022
  • 118 parishes (64%) conducted at least one listening session from Dec 2021 – Mar 2022
  • 168 reports have been submitted
  • 12,794 people participated in person
  • 610 responded to the questions online
  • All 10 college campus ministries participated
  • Just over 50% of participants were young people (under the age of 30): PSR, Catholic schools, high schools, young adult groups

The response to the Synod in our diocese far exceeded our expectations, especially in light of all the challenges that we faced with timing and the pandemic. So, thank you!

A copy of the Working Document from our Diocesan Pre-synodal Gathering is available online. This is not the final diocesan synthesis report. The Working Document outlines the process followed during the pre-synodal gathering and includes the top 10 priorities and most common themes that emerged during the consultation. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. Damian Ference or Lynette Saenz.

Our Lady of Angels Prayer Group
Romans 12:2 “…be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Our Lady of Angels Prayer Group will offer a ‘Life in the Spirit Seminar’ this Fall on eight consecutive Tuesdays, September 6th through October 25th, 2022 from 7:30-9:00pm.  Join us in the Primary Building (behind Linus Hall) 3644 Rocky River Dr., Cleveland, OH 44111 (there will be signs).

This seminar will focus on the movement we know as the Catholic Charismatic Renewal – a renewal that all the Popes from Paul VI to Francis have given their support and approval.  If you desire more for your life, this seminar can be the beginning of a ‘renewal’ of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  The seminar presentations for the eight weeks will prepare participants for the prayer of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.  We have already received the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.  This prayer is a new, refreshing renewal of the Holy Spirit’s gifts for your life and helps you to surrender more fully to Our Lord Jesus.  To support you to live out this new life, we offer our weekly prayer meeting – joining with like-minded people in a prayer group.  For more information and to register, please phone Verna at 216-251-3560 or Tom at 216-252-5724.  There is no charge for this seminar.
