Diocesan Memorandum

September, 2020 | Vol. 54, no. 9 | Prot. No. C-40/2020

The Diocesan Memorandum (formerly the Clergy Memorandum) is a service of the Office of the Chancellor for clergy and lay leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland, providing a summary of relevant and timely information from the Office of the Bishop and other diocesan offices.

OFFICE OF THE DIOCESAN ADMINISTRATOR

Installation of Bishop of Cleveland
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Edward C. Malesic of Greensburg as bishop of Cleveland. He will be installed as the twelfth bishop of Cleveland on Monday September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, in a Mass beginning at 2:00 p.m. Due to the current public health crisis, attendance at the installation will be severely limited and will be by invitation only. Collections

Catholic Communications Collection: 26-27 September 2020
The collection for the 2020 Catholic Communications Campaign provides grants to Catholic organizations that share our experience of faith, worship, and witness through social media sites, podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Please support this important work and be generous in the collection. Your generosity is a direct act of witness in itself, as you facilitate the communication of the Gospel message. The special second collection is scheduled in our parishes for the weekend of 26-27 September 2020.

Office for Worship

Singing during Mass
On August 17, 2020, the Office for Worship presented a webinar discussing the most recent research findings on singing and COVID-19, with implications and recommendations for Catholic liturgy. The archive video and presentation slides are available at the Office for Worship/Music website. The following general recommendations summarize the presentation:

  • Masks for everyone – including all singers.
  • No congregational singing
  • If done, severely limited (
  • Physically distanced (>6’) cantor singing unfamiliar music for those Mass parts that may be relegated to a schola
  • No choral/schola singing
  • If done, choir/schola should be masked, physically distanced from congregation, singers physically distanced >6’ from one another, and singing severely limited (
  • Preference for string or percussion instruments
  • All instrumentalists masked.
  • Limited use of physically distanced wind or brass instruments using PPE as described below (instrument bell masked/covered, keys covered)
  • Only 1 person should use the ambo/a cantor stand/a microphone for any given liturgy, with minimum 30 minutes between liturgies to allow for HVAC air changes.

October 2020 Liturgical Calendar
October is Respect Life Month. Below are five simple steps for celebrating Respect Life Month, either the weekend of Respect Life Sunday (October 4th), or throughout the month.

  • Display the Respect Life poster where people will be most likely to see it.
  • Use the bulletin announcement and bulletin cover or wrapper, and insert the reflection flyer into the bulletin.
  • Preach on the Respect Life theme. Consider using the reflection flyer and sample homily helps as inspiration.
  • Pray for the protection of human life during the Prayer of the Faithful. Sample intercessions are provided on the USCCB website.
  • Invite parishioners to reflect the rest of the week on the theme and what it means to them personally. (USCCB)

Saint Mary’s Mission and religious articles
Some parishes have been contacted by a Ms. Kimberly Walters of “Saint Mary’s Mission” in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She explains that she has been working with Catholic churches, convents, schools, etc., in helping find new homes for used religious items that are no longer needed. We have been informed by the Diocese of Harrisburg that this organization is not affiliated with the Diocese and that Ms. Walters buys and sells items on EBay. Please consult with the Diocese of Cleveland archives prior to disposal, gifting or sale of relics or religious objects which have been blessed or used in worship.

50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration
The coronavirus pandemic, as with all other diocesan events, has greatly disrupted our plans. At this time, bringing together couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary is not possible. However, we do not want the year to pass by without marking this very special occasion. To honor all couples married in 1970, we would like to send a diocesan certificate as a keepsake. We ask all jubilarians to complete this form. Catholic couples celebrating a significant anniversary, or those close to them, may also wish to consider ordering a parchment marking a Papal Blessing, via the website of the Office of Papal Charities.

If circumstances change and make it possible for us to safely gather for a Mass to celebrate the 50thanniversary of couples married in 1970, we will then notify all those who completed the diocesan form. Visit our website or contact the Marriage & Family Ministry office for more information.

Catholic Renewal Ministries
We invite everyone to our “Rosary in the Parking Lot” every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. (weather permitting) in the parking lot of Our Lady of Angels Primary building (behind Linus Hall). Bring a lawn chair and join in this most beautiful prayer, including intercessory prayer and the Chaplet of Mercy. All are welcome. For questions, contact Don Lawrence 740-424-4707.

Catholic Renewal Ministries will host a Traveling Charismatic Mass on Friday, October 16th, at 7 pm, at St. Ambrose Parish, 929 Pearl Rd., Brunswick 44212. Fr. Bob Franco will be the celebrant. Praise and worship will begin at 7 pm, followed by the liturgy at 7:30 pm. A social will follow Mass and healing prayer teams will be available for individual prayer. Diocesan guidelines for social distancing and wearing of masks will be observed. For more information, contact Fr. Franco at 440-327-2201 or CRM at 440-944-9445.
