Stewardship of Talent

Moreover, it is required in stewards, that a person be found faithful to his gifts.

1 Corinthians 4:12

"If stewardship means taking care of, and sharing, all of God's gifts, then stewardship of the gift of talent means nurturing, developing, and using the God-given abilities and characteristics that help to define 'who we are' as individuals human beings...We give them something of ourselves, an intimate sharing of 'who we are' for the good of others."

Stewardship, A Disciples Response, p.66

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

1 Peter 4:10

As the parish works on sustaining Stewardship as a way of life, it will be important to help parishioners understand, recognize and name the gifts they have received from God. Through discernment of gifts, all the people of the faith community can discover more deeply the gifts they have received so that they in turn can offer them in love and service to their families, their church, and their communities.

The Stewardship Office offers two effective resources to aid in this process: 1) Joyfully GIfted spiritual gifts discernment process, more information below; and 2) a section of the larger Stewardship Manual which focuses on Discernment of Gifts, how to get started, lessons learned, templates and additional resources and helpful websites.

Joyfully Gifted: Spiritual Gifts Discernment Process

Imagine a parish community where all of the laity have discovered and are using their spiritual gifts and indirect them authentically to the heart of the Gospel.  We might find that we will have parish communities guided by the Holy Spirit, living in communion, to be mysteriously fruitful. (Joy of the Gospel, 130).

The Offices of Stewardship and Evangelization have been offering a two-step process to help in the discovery and discernment of an individual’s spiritual gifts:

(1) retreat

(2) small group community

Learn how over 80 parishes/schools in the diocese have benefited from hosting this process.  The diocese provides the presenters and handout materials; the parish provides the registration process, hospitality and follow-up activities.
