His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze will be the keynote speaker at the annual convention of the Nigerian American Cultural Center on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. His topic will be the 'Role of the Family in Contemporary Society'.
Cardinal Arinze is the Prefect emeritus of the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He was born on 1 November 1932 in Eziowelle, a city of the Archdiocese of Onitsha, Nigeria. He was named Archbishop on 26 June 1967. In 1979, he was elected president of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of Nigeria until 1984, when His Holiness John Paul II asked him to head as pro-president the Secretariat for Non-Christians (now the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue). On 24 October 1999, he received a gold medallion from the International Council of Christians and Jews for his 'outstanding achievement in inter-faith relations'. On 1 October 2002, he was nominated Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
