Frances Xavier Cabrini

The Feast Day of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini who has been named the Patron Saint of Immigrants is Wednesday, November 13.

Frances was a woman who came here to the U.S. and dedicated her life and work to support the immigrant population.  She was the first United States Citizen to be canonized by the Catholic Church.

Remembering our own history as an immigrant people, and in support of those immigrants coming to our country today, please join in the National Call-in Day for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

Call your U.S. House Representative at 1-855-589-5698 and leave this simple message: "Support a Path to Citizenship and Oppose the SAFE Act."

After calling in, there will be a short recording with instructions to give this message to Members of Congress:

"Support a Path to Citizenship and Oppose the SAFE Act."

After the recording, callers will be prompted to enter their zip code on their telephone keypad and will be connected directly to their Representative's DC office.

"My name is ______ from (town/city).  As a constituent, I urge you to support immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship that keeps families together. I strongly urge you to oppose the SAFE Act. Most importantly, help to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year."

Share with all your friends and networks the information about the call-in day, toll-free number and message to Congress and ask them to make the call.

Information on the SAFE Act:

  • The SAFE Act is an interior enforcement bill that would grant extensive immigration enforcement powers to states and localities and eradicate effective government oversight.
  • The SAFE Act would allow states and political subdivisions of states/localities to ?investigate, identify, apprehend, arrest, detain or transfer to federal custody? individuals in order to enforce any federal immigration violation-civil, criminal or state immigration penalty allowed under the act.
  • The SAFE Act would permit site and local law enforcement officers, untrained in federal immigration law, to issue an immigration hold, and detain an individual indefinitely, resulting in prolonged detention for U.S. citizens and lawfully permanent residents.
  • The SAFE Act detention policy proposed in the act calls for an increase in the number of detention facilities, an increase in the population to be detained (including all individuals awaiting a decision for removal) and an increase in funding for state and local governments to detail individuals in local jails.  This would lead to an increase in cost to taxpayers nearing $1 billion/year.

Provisions in the SAFE Act would criminalize religious leaders and houses of worship that provide humanitarian assistance to all persons regardless of immigration status.  The SAFE Act would make it a crime to transport undocumented immigrants and ?encourage or induce a person to reside in the United States? if that person lacks immigration status.  The penalties for these activities range from 3 to 20 years in prison.
