Two men in formation for the priesthood to be ordained to the diaconate at St. John Cathedral

Press Releases

April 1, 2019

Two men studying at Saint Mary Seminary have been called to the Order of Deacon by the Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez for service to the Diocese of Cleveland. The ordination will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Cleveland, Ohio. The Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez will be the ordaining bishop.

Those to be ordained to the diaconate are listed below along with the names of their home parishes and their parents:

  • Joshua James Cochrac of St. Mary of the Falls Parish, Olmsted Falls
  • Joseph Patrick Robinson of Mary, Queen of the Apostles Parish, Brook Park

According to the Rite of Ordination of Deacons, “strengthened by the gift of the Holy Spirit, the deacons will help the bishop and his priests in the ministry of the Word, of the altar, and of charity, showing themselves to be servants to all.” Ordained deacons administer baptism, assist at the altar at Mass and distribute the Eucharist, bring the Eucharist as viaticum to the dying, read the sacred Scriptures to the faithful and, on occasion, to preach. They also preside at the Church’s public prayer, administer sacramentals, assist at and bless marriages and officiate at funeral and burial rites.

The newly ordained will minister as deacons while continuing their studies and formation for priestly ministry.
