Jesus said in today’s Gospel, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”
A person goes to a doctor when she is aware that something is wrong. How many people do we know who never see a doctor because they say, “I feel fine.” But don’t all of us need a doctor to perform a regular physical. Are some people in such great physical shape that they need no help at all?
Jesus is the divine physician and all of us need reform in one way or another. We need a spiritual checkup because sin lurks in our thoughts and actions.
Now, those who think of themselves as spiritually perfect, like the Pharisees, will never seek to submit their lives to the examination of a higher power. They think they are fine – and nothing can be wrong with them. In essence, they turn themselves into their own gods.
Do we have the courage to go to the Doctor of Life? Do we know the need to go to Jesus for his healing touch. When Jesus says, “Follow me,” do we get up and go into the exam room with him?
