Saint Peter testifies to the basic Christian faith that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.
It is on this faith that Jesus begins to build his Church. It is the faith upon which the Catholic Church rests secure today. It is the faith that each successor of Saint Peter is asked to profess, protect, and promote.
Today is the feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, which indicates the office of Peter and the popes who have come after him, down to our own Holy Father Pope Francis.
Let us pray that we will listen to the voice of Peter, and take the faith that Peter proclaimed to heart. Then we can take the faith of Peter with us to our families and communities. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Our belief that Jesus is God’s Son, risen from the dead, makes all the difference for us. We pray for the Holy Father who sustains this faith - and I thank you for your prayers for me, as a successor to the apostles, asked by the Holy Spirit to keep the faith of Saint Peter in all of its fulness alive in the Diocese of Cleveland.
