Tuesday of the First Week of Lent – Feb. 23, 2021

God spoke at the beginning of the Book of Genesis and his Word separated light from darkness, made both water and land, and created birds, fish, plants and animals. Finally, God spoke and created the first parents of the human race.

God’s Word is powerful and effective.

We read it at the beginning of the Gospel of John, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Nothing came into being without him. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him.”

The prophet Isaiah alludes to the power of the Word of God by saying that it is like the rain that comes from the sky. It comes down and makes the earth fertile and fruitful.

The Lord’s Prayer that we say so often is also from the Word of God. It can move us to be changed. By praying this and other passages of scripture, God can soften our hearts. In fact, the Word of God that we recite in the Lord’s Prayer can make us more like God himself when we say, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” God is powerful enough to accept his mercy in exchange for the mercy we show to others.

Remember the Word of God we receive and recite was powerful enough to create the universe. May the Word of God we read and recite have the power to make us more forgiving, loving, humble, and faithful people.
