Jonah was a lackluster preacher. He didn’t want to proclaim God’s Word to the people of Nineveh. In fact, he tried to escape his mission by taking a ship going in the opposite direction. That’s when the large fish (sometimes called a whale) swallowed Jonah and took him for three days in its belly before spitting Jonah up on the shores of Nineveh.
Still, at the preaching of Jonah, Nineveh converted and returned to the Lord.
It is not the power of the preacher, but the power of God who uses the preacher that touches hearts and moves souls.
Whenever we hear the Word of God preached, lets pray that God use it as an occasion to speak to us — even if the preacher is not at his best. And, when we hear the message that Jesus was raised after three days from the dead, even if it is not eloquently said by the one telling us, may we be moved to repent of our sins, like the people of Nineveh.
