Today Jesus gives us the most famous parable of the Prodigal Son. He tells it in response to those who were upset that sinners and tax collectors were being drawn to his message of mercy.
After having squander his inheritance, given to him before the death of his father, the son decides to return home. Apparently, the father had been waiting for his son’s return. When he catches sight of him, the father runs to greet him. He embraces his son. He does not even allow his son to finish his rehearsed apology before he returns his son to his household.
It is no wonder tax collectors and sinners flocked to Christ. His was a message of reset. Life could change for them. They could regain their original dignity.
How about us? Do we accept the lavish love the Father has for us? And, when we make our return to him, do we understand that he actually runs to up to embrace us and restore our place in his household as children of God?
