It continues to amaze me that the salvation of the world hung on the decision of a teenaged girl in a little known place in the ancient world. But that is how God does things, according to his plan and not ours.
This girl was prepared in advance by God to have a freedom that only Adam and Eve had, lacking original sin from her conception. Would she say “no” to God, as Adam and Eve did or would she reset God’s plan for the world with a definitive “yes?” We know the answer. She said to the angel who had come to announce God’s plan in her, “May it be done to me according to your word.”
I give thanks to God for Mary. In her freedom, she gave us our freedom. She gave us Jesus who takes away the sins of the world and restores the world to God’s original promise of eternal life.
Mary, take us by the hand and lead us to your Son. Show us how to love him as you love him. Be an example of fidelity and trust. Whatever God wants of us, may we, like you, have the courage to accept. Thank you for saying “yes” to the savior. Without you, he would not be.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
