A message from Bishop Malesic on the celebration of the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On the day he died, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was remembered as an apostle of non-violence who led the civil rights movement in the sixties. Today, his legacy of peace and non-violence, racial equality and justice for all remains for all of us as beacon of light and love, drawing us away from the sin of racism toward the fundamental truth that because all humans share a common origin, we are all brothers and sisters, all equally made in the image of God.

As our nation celebrates the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we have the opportunity to reflect on the legacy of his life and to recommit ourselves to the Gospel message of love, mutual respect and the dignity of the human person he preached.

Pope Francis reminds us that, “In today’s world, which increasingly faces the challenges of social injustice, division and conflict that hinder the realization of the common good, Dr. King’s dream of harmony and equality for all people, attained through nonviolent and peaceful means, remains ever timely.” From his encyclical, Fratelli tutti, the Pope calls attention to our responsibility as Christians saying, “Each one of us is called to be an artisan of peace, by uniting and not dividing, by extinguishing hatred and not holding on to it, by opening paths of dialogue.”

May we lift our hearts to Christ and through him pray to God our Father asking his help that all of us work without ceasing for that justice which brings lasting peace. And may we always remember the courage and sacrifice of Dr. King, sharing his dream that together we can build a community of unity, peace and hope rooted in a deep respect for all.
