Marcionism (I know it’s an odd word) is an ancient heresy developed by Marcion of Asia Minor in the second century A.D. He believed that the God of the Old Testament was different from the God of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The old God was vain and angry. The new God of Jesus was sheer goodness. Marcion’s theology was roundly refuted by the early Church.

That is why what Jesus said in today’s Gospel is so important. He said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Jesus does not mark a break from the teaching and witness of the Old Testament, he lifts it up to new heights. We believe that the voice of the prophets of the Old Testament still speak to us today. That’s why our first reading is often taken from an Old Testament book. And, yes, we are still obliged to learn and live the Commandments of Moses that were written in stone for us.

But Jesus was able to do what none of us ever could. He kept the law of God perfectly. He was the person the prophets pointed to be our savior.

What Marcion believed is that there are different gods for different seasons. That is not our faith. We have one God for every age of this world. God is the alpha and omega, beginning and end, ever ancient and ever new. Jesus has given a face to the God of all time. His face is love.

We follow the God who created this world and has never left it. Nor will God ever leave you, for he is unchanging in his care for you.
