When Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, the earthly life of God’s son in the flesh was begun. That is why the feast of the Annunciation is so significant for us. Christ was born on Christmas Day, but he was given to us as savior at his conception, when human life begins.
We must be grateful to Mary, the teenage virgin of Nazareth. It is only because of her “Yes” to God that we can celebrate the life of Christ among us. What would have happened if she had said, “No?” I don’t know. God’s plans are not easily thwarted by our human mistakes. No matter, Mary said, “Yes,” and the rest is history.
Still, Mary asked, “How can this be?” It wasn’t in the same manner of doubting that caused Zechariah to become mute. Mary believed that God could do what he was planning. No, Mary’s statement, “How can this be,” was an exclamation of wonderment at how God would do it, perhaps alternatively said, “How shall this be?” The angel revealed the manner of God’s activity, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” God comes to us and changes us and saves us in the manner of his choosing, after all. May it be done to us according to his will.
Let’s take some time today to say a heartfelt thank you to Mary, whose trust in God allowed us to have a relationship with Jesus our savior, Lord, brother and God.
