God revealed his essence to Moses in the Book of Exodus. God said to him, “I am who I am.” (Exodus 3:14). One sentence later, God told Moses to say to the people, “I AM has sent me to you.”
Speaking to those opposed to him, Jesus said that who keeps his word will never see death. He told them that the Father glorifies him. He knows the Father. And indicated that he knew Abraham. To this last statement, they said, “You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?”
Jesus responded with a statement that caused them to pick up stones to throw at him. He said, “Before Abraham came to be, “I AM.”
With those two words, “I AM,” Jesus had made himself equal to God who had revealed his essence to Moses: “I am who I am.”
Do we see Jesus as God himself? And do we hope that Jesus, Our God, will give us eternal life in response to the faith we have in him?
