Holy Saturday – April 16, 2022

Today is a day of silence and reflection. We have just commemorated the death of our Lord. He is in the tomb. It is dark.

Tonight, however, we begin to celebrate death’s great reversal as we come together as a Church to celebrate the Easter Vigil.

The Easter Vigil begins as we gather in silence in the darkness on this Saturday night. A fire is started, and the new Easter Candle is lighted from it. One after another, each person’s candle is lighted from the original fire until the entire church is illuminated.

Tonight’s scriptures reveal God’s original plan of salvation and how he wants to restore us to the life that was lost by the sin of Adam and Eve.

Jesus Christ, crucified for our sins, will rise again to restore us to the life that God had planned for us from the very beginning of creation. Darkness will turn to light. Silence will turn to the great proclamation that Christ lives again. He will be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He will be the spring within us that wells up to eternal life again. The Church will be the place that lights the way to salvation. We see this light of our faith in the Risen Christ that is symbolized in the candles that will burn bright tonight.

And so, we wait until tonight, when we can celebrate, once again, the return of Jesus to us and for us. We wait for the savior to turn our night into day and death into life.
