Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – June 26, 2022

St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians has been called the charter of Christian freedom. Today we read from that letter, “for freedom Christ has set us free.”

To be clear, we are not free to do as we want, but to do as we ought. We are free from a slavery to sin so that we can do what is good, right, true, and noble. In the end, we are free to give ourselves to Christ — and to submit ourselves to him. We are free from a slavery to this world so that we can choose to be servants of Christ.

When exercising our newfound freedom, we do well to reflect on the warning of St Paul in his Letter to the Galatians: “But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.”

Our right to be free, therefore, must include the obligation to use our freedom for the good of others. Slaves of this world will be people who try to take others down rather than to build them up in Christ.

“For freedom Christ has set us free.” May we always reject slavery of any kind so as to live as the liberated children of God, always loving others and desiring the salvation of souls, including our own, by serving Christ the Lord in the freedom that has set us free to be who we were always meant to be — children of God.

Have a blessed week everyone.
