I like Lent. I truly enjoy this holy season of increased fasting, praying and almsgiving.
In many ways, it is as refreshing for me as taking a shower to wash away the dirt and grime after a long hot day. Throughout the holy season of Lent, we are washed in the shower of God’s love as we draw closer to Him in prayer and service.
Our human limitations, mortality, and sins are symbolized by the ashes placed our heads today. But notice how quickly the ashes fade and eventually disappear. Our mortality fades into eternity and our sins disappear in God’s mercy.
Yes, I like Lent. It is a time of renewal and growth, comfort, and grace.
May we use this time well. Every bath requires that we place ourselves into the water. Lent requires us to place ourselves into the presence of God’s love.
Today, the Prophet Joel tells us just how strong God’s love is for us: “For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment” (Joel 2:13). May we never forget this truth – God is love.
Have a great Lent everyone. In fact, enjoy it.
