Wednesday of the First Week of Lent – March 1, 2023

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to those people who wanted signs from heaven in order to have faith. We have played at this ourselves. We say things like, “If you give me a sign Lord, then I will …”

Truth be told, sometimes we do get signs from God. At other times, we don’t.

But Jesus said that the best and most powerful sign that God would give to the world is the sign of Jonah – who was in the belly of the great fish for three days before finding life again, and whose preaching converted sinners to repentance.

The sign of Jonah that Jesus is referring to is his Resurrection after three days.

Think about the reason for Lent. It is a time of preparation for Easter. It is a time when we focus on the sign of Jesus alive from the dead – an empty tomb – like the whale that could not contain Jonah. This is at the heart of the preaching of Jesus, repent and believe – because a dead man will come back to life again. First Jesus, and then us!

What other sign do we need to believe that God is powerful enough to forgive our sins and lift us up to new life as well? Once we know the Resurrection of Jesus, do we really need another sign to have faith that he will cause us to rise up, too?
