In the Gospel of Matthew 5:43-38, Jesus told us to do something that will go against the grain of our human nature. He said: “(L)ove your enemies; pray for those who persecute you.” He also told us to welcome those who were not our own. In short, he said, “(B)e perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Take some time today to think about what Jesus is saying to you. Who is Jesus asking you to pray for and love? Perhaps now is the time to say a prayer for those people you normally wouldn’t consider praying for – and use the grace of your prayer to help you be more welcoming to those you would rather keep outside your circle of friends. Perhaps, to use a common phrase, pray and work to build bridges instead of walls.
