Clergy assignment changes – May 2023

Father Daniel F. Schlegel, secretary and vicar for clergy and religious for the Diocese of Cleveland, was appointed administrator, Communion of Saints Parish, Cleveland Heights, effective June 15. This appointment is in addition to his assignment as secretary and vicar for clergy and religious for the Diocese of Cleveland.

Father Joseph R. Mamich, pastor, St. Joseph Parish, Strongsville, was appointed assistant secretary for clergy and religious for the Diocese of Cleveland, effective June 15. This appointment is in addition to his assignment as pastor, St. Joseph Parish, Strongsville. His residence remains unchanged.

Father Neil G. Walters concludes his appointment as administrator, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Elyria and administrator, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Lorain. He was appointed pastor, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Elyria and pastor, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Lorain, effective April 18.

Father Vincent J. Hawk, pastor, Holy Trinity Parish, Avon was appointed administrator, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Avon, effective July 1. This appointment is in addition to his assignment as pastor, Holy Trinity Parish, Avon. His residence remains unchanged.

Father Deogratias M. Ruwaainenyi concludes his appointment as chaplain for Fairview Hospital, Cleveland and he was appointed parochial vicar, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Avon, effective July 1.

Father Matthew M. Cortnik concludes his appointment as parochial vicar, St. Rita Parish, Solon and he was appointed administrator, SS. Cosmas and Damian Parish, Twinsburg, effective July 1.

Father Stephen M. Spisak concludes his authorized leave of absence for sick leave and he was appointed part-time parochial vicar, Communion of Saints Parish, Cleveland Heights, effective June 15.

Father David D. Liberatore, senior parochial vicar, St. Basil the Great Parish, Brecksville received permission to retire, effective Jan. 1.

Father Donald E. Snyder, pastor, St. Ladislas Parish, Westlake has received permission to reside in the rectory at St. Thomas More Parish, Brooklyn upon his retirement on July 1.

Father Donald H. Dunson was transferred from parochial vicar, St. Angela Merici Parish, Fairview Park to parochial vicar, St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Parma, effective June 13.

Father Andrew J. Gonzalez was transferred from parochial vicar, Holy Family Parish, Stow to parochial vicar, St. Gabriel Parish, Concord Township, effective June 13 June.

Father Daniel M. Samide was transferred from parochial vicar, St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Parma to parochial vicar, St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, effective June 13.

Father Joshua F. Trefney was transferred from parochial vicar, St. Albert the Great Parish, North Royalton to parochial vicar, Holy Family Parish, Stow, effective June 13.

Father Louis H. Thomas, pastor, St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Norton was elected to represent Group V (2006-2014) on the Clergy Personnel Board. The three-year term of office begins June 1 and concludes on May 31, 2026.

Father Matthew J. Byrne, pastor, St. John Bosco Parish, Parma Heights was appointed Catholic chaplain to the city of Parma Heights safety forces, effective immediately. This appointment is in addition to his assignment as pastor, St. John Bosco Parish, Parma Heights.

Deacon David T. Chojnacki, who will be ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 20, was appointed parochial vicar, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Wooster, effective June 13.

Deacon Dominic G. Gideon, who will be ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 20, was appointed parochial vicar, St. Albert the Great Parish, North Royalton, effective June 13.

Deacon Ian W. Kelly, who will be ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 20, was appointed parochial vicar, St. John Vianney Parish, Mentor, effective June 13.

Deacon Jeffrey S. Liptak, who will be ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 20, was appointed parochial vicar, St. Basil the Great Parish, Brecksville, effective June 13.

Deacon Christopher D. Stein, who will be ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 20, was appointed parochial vicar, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Gates Mills, effective June 13.

Deacon Duckhyun Han, who will be ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Daegu, South Korea on May 20, was appointed parochial vicar, St. Mary Parish, Chardon and parochial vicar, St. Patrick Parish, Thompson, effective June 27.

Father W. David Nestler, OFM Cap, with the permission of the Very Rev. Robert Marva, OFM Cap, provincial superior of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Province of St. Augustine, concluded his assignment as pastor, Holy Spirit Parish, Garfield Heights, effective April 14.

Father David Domanski, OFM Cap, with the permission of the Very Rev. Robert Marva, OFM Cap, provincial superior of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Province of St. Augustine, concluded his assignment as parochial vicar, St. Agnes/Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Cleveland and he was administrator, Holy Spirit Parish, Garfield Heights, effective April 14. This appointment is in addition to his assignment as Catholic chaplain at the Cuyahoga County Jail in Cleveland. His residence remains unchanged.

Father Philip Bernier, OFM Cap, with the permission of the Very Rev. Robert Marva, OFM Cap, provincial superior of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Province of St. Augustine, concluded his appointment as administrator, St. Peter Parish, Cleveland and he was appointed pastor, St. Peter Parish, Cleveland, effective April 19. This appointment is in addition to his assignment as administrator, Conversion of St. Paul Shrine, Cleveland, and as parochial vicar, St. Malachi Parish, Cleveland. His residence remains unchanged.

Father John Bednarik, OFM Cap, with the permission of the Very Rev. Robert Marva, OFM Cap, provincial superior of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Province of St. Augustine, was appointed chaplain to the Poor Clare nuns at the Conversation of St. Paul Shrine, Cleveland, effective May 22. He received permission to live at St. Paul Friary in Cleveland, effective May 22.

The diaconal assignment of Deacon Kenneth J. Piechowski, St. John Neumann Parish, Strongsville concluded and he was granted retirement status, effective July 1.

The diaconal assignment of Deacon Jay R. Ogan, St. Peter Parish, Lorain concluded and he was granted retirement status, effective Dec. 26.

Deacon Robert J. Blackburn, who was ordained a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 6, was appointed permanent deacon, St. Basil the Great Parish, Brecksville, effective May 22.

Deacon Andrew J. Davis, who was ordained a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 6, was appointed permanent deacon, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Akron, effective May 22.

Deacon William G. Elwer, who was ordained a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 6, was appointed permanent deacon, St. Jude Parish, Elyria, effective May 22.

Deacon Michael D. Mucic, who was ordained a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 6, was appointed permanent deacon, St. Richard Parish, North Olmsted, effective May 22.

Deacon Robert J. Stegmaier, who was ordained a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 6, was appointed permanent deacon, St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Akron, effective May 22.

Deacon Thomas W. Ward, who was ordained a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 6, was appointed permanent deacon, Holy Redeemer Parish, Cleveland, effective May 22.
